ILIAS is an open source LMS born at the University of Cologne. It has a large functional scope and, despite its long history (10+ years), it stays very well structured. And I can say this is unusual in the open source market!

Keeping a consistent roadmap is a challenge when most features are provided by a community and aggregated around the initial product. ILIAS meets this challenge thanks to strong design processes.
